Despite its PR problem, mindfulness meditation is a simple, secular, scientifically validated exercise for your brain. Just in case you\u2019re worried, meditation doesn\u2019t require a lot of the things people fear it might. For example, you don\u2019t have to sit in a funny position, light incense, chant, become a Buddhist or believe in anything in particular. <!--more-->There\u2019s nothing to join and no special outfits to wear. Meditation is not going to solve all your problems, but it will bring you more mindfulness, the practice of awareness, and with that clarity perhaps bring you to a more intentional, goal-driven life experience. Two great layman-language books on meditation are: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/10%25-Happier-Self-Help-Actually-Works--\/dp\/0062265431\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1471450116&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=10%25+happier\" target=\"_blank\">10% Happier<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Real-Happiness-Meditation-28-Day-Program\/dp\/0761159258\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1471450170&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=real+happiness\" target=\"_blank\">Real Happiness<\/a>, check &#8217;em out.<\/p>\n<p>Give meditation a try by doing the homework below and, who knows\u2026maybe you\u2019ll find it as helpful of a daily, or weekly, habit as me. \u00a0Here\u2019s a word about it from my <em>Talk with Tom <\/em>podcast host, Aaron Wilker:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meditation and Its Benefits a g<\/strong><strong>uest blog by<\/strong>: Aaron Wilker, host of\u00a0<em>Talk with Tom<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today we are hyper-connected to everything.\u00a0 Take a minute the next time that you are walking down a busy street, or standing on a train\/subway platform, to notice how many people have their cell phone or some other electronic device in their hand?\u00a0 Today we get buzzed, dinged or musically notified when someone responds to one of our posts on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.\u00a0 If our favorite sports team does something, like trade away their best outfielder, we are immediately notified.\u00a0 We are so inundated with electrical stimuli that our brain and mind have no time to relax and process what is truly important to us, our goals.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>ENTER MEDITATION<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Enter meditation, a time to take a break from the Internet, television and any other electronic distraction.\u00a0 It is a time where the mind can tap into, what Napoleon Hill called the Ether, and evaluate what it needs us to do for our next step towards accomplishing our goals.\u00a0 When we are sleeping our body is getting a rest, but our subconscious mind is still working, processing the day\u2019s activities as well as forming ideas for the next day.\u00a0 If we take some time during our waking hours to relax, meditate and tap into what our subconscious mind has worked on overnight, we become more productive.\u00a0 We can better sort out our tasks and plan appropriately.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>HOW TO MEDITATE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Meditation could be a period as short as ten to fifteen minutes or as long as an hour.\u00a0 It is up to you.\u00a0 When meditating, I recommend you put all electronic gadgets into another room where you won\u2019t hear or feel them.\u00a0 Get in the habit of separating yourself from that needed stimuli.\u00a0 Studies have shown that when we receive an alert on our phone, the body releases a little Dopamine, so as the day goes on, we crave that little sensation.<\/p>\n<p>Meditating will help you break that electronic leash and get you into the habit of paying attention more to what is going on around you, see the opportunities that are right there in front of you, and BE IN THE NOW!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>TOM\u2019S HOMEWORK FOR YOU<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Download my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/documents\/Personal_Strategic_Plan_Template_v8.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Personal Strategic Plan<\/a>\u00a0and add a meditation practice to your list of goals in the Personal life area.<\/li>\n<li>Read <a href=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/wordpress\/2016\/goals-series-14-apps-to-help-you-keep-your-new-years-resolutions\/\" target=\"_blank\">my previous blog post on different apps out there<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/habit-chain-dont-break-chain!\/id953783645?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\">Habit Chain<\/a>, and then download your favorite Habit app to keep track of your progress and create some accountability.<\/li>\n<li>Research different guided meditations in the <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/genre\/ios\/id36?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\">iPhone App Store<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Android Google Play<\/a>, and find the one that best resonates with you.
