But there\u2019s <em>so<\/em> much more to our inner timekeeper, especially when considered through the ancient wisdom of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Traditional_Chinese_medicine\">Chinese medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to the 2,500-year-old practice, just about every function of our body is linked to a specific time on our internal clock. Each organ has a time period each day when it\u2019s in the spotlight. This the time when that particular organ, and its related <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meridian_(Chinese_medicine)\">energy meridians<\/a>, are said to be most energized and working hardest, affecting everything from our emotions to our productivity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here is a tour of the Morning, Noon and Night body clock according to this ancient practice &#8211; tips on how to optimize it through food and lifestyle choices. Think of it as a roadmap that\u2019s meant to guide you toward working with your body\u2019s natural rhythms, rather than against them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>MORNING<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drink some water and do a gentle workout <\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Organ: Large intestine <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Actions: Waking up and releasing<br \/>\nEmotions being processed: Guilt and stagnation<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s best to start the day with water, as hydration allows the large intestine to begin its process of elimination. Sorry, but hot coffee doesn\u2019t count\u2026caffeine in the morning is what leads to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/good-food\/how-to-deal-with-a-coffee-crash\/\">midday crash<\/a> and the release of too much cortisol throughout the day. You should also give yourself time upon waking to relax and allow for your body to naturally detox.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eat a nutritious breakfast <\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Organ: Stomach <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Actions: Eating and nourishing<br \/>\nEmotions being processed: Despair<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Chinese medicine, breakfast really <em>is<\/em> the most important meal of the day. A nutritious breakfast will assist in building good, long-lasting energy for the day.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do your most mentally taxing work <\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Organs: Pancreas and spleen <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Actions: Thinking and working<br \/>\nEmotions being processed: Jealousy, worry, and low self-esteem<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Chinese medicine, the spleen\u2019s considered the most important digestive organ. It\u2019s key in building blood\u2014so if you haven\u2019t eaten by this time, you\u2019ll still have a bit of time to squeeze in a good breakfast that\u2019ll be digested well. While your spleen\u2019s busy transmuting food into usable energy, you\u2019re better able to work and use your mental energy positively. This builds confidence, which gives you the power of avoiding jealousy and low self-esteem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>AFTERNOON<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eat a light lunch with friends <\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Organ: Heart <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Actions: Engaging and consuming<br \/>\nEmotions being processed: Joy or frightful sadness<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To keep things light and happy during these hours, avoid overly taxing your body\u2014you want your heart to work at its best. This is an ideal time to have a nice lunch over a good conversation for a happy heart &#8211; no sad desk salads, please.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Each organ has a time period each day when it\u2019s in the spotlight. <\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start to wind down <\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Organ: Kidney <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Actions: Replenishing vital energy<br \/>\nEmotions being processed: Fear<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re feeling an extreme level of fatigue late afternoon, after the typical afternoon drop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/good-advice\/8-signs-you-have-adrenal-fatigue-and-what-to-do-about-it\/\">you may have an issue with your adrenals<\/a>. Physically healthy adrenals feel vibrant at this time, but feelings of fear can creep in if they\u2019re not in good shape.\u00a0 Signs of kidney and adrenal fatigue include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/good-advice\/mismatched-sex-drive-relationship\/\">lack of libido<\/a> and lower back pain. So if you\u2019re someone who is the last to leave the office, and you\u2019re experiencing these symptoms, you may want to reconsider your habits in favor of more R&amp;R.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>NIGHT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus on self-care and QT with loved ones <\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Organ: Pericardium <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Action: Emotional support<br \/>\nEmotions being processed: Excessive euphoria and compassion<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In case you didn\u2019t know (like me), the pericardium supports your heart function. That\u2019s why the evening is good for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/good-advice\/guided-meditation-relax-new-moms\/\">meditation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/good-sweat\/slt-founder-amanda-freeman-opens-stretchd\/\">gentle stretching<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/good-advice\/basic-astronomy-tips-stargazing-illustrations\/\">relaxing with a loved one<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/good-looks\/homemade-bath-ideas-from-pantry\/\">taking a bath<\/a>. Heal the heart and wind the body down for the day during these hours.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sleepy time <\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Organ: Liver, Gallbladder<strong> and blood vessels <\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Action: Sleeping and regenerating<br \/>\nEmotions being processed: Anger, anxiety, and frustration<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Body regeneration and healing are thought to happen overnight. It is the gallbladder\u2019s time to shine (the organ is associated with the muscles and sinews of the body in Chinese medicine). Your liver\u2019s the home of your blood and it\u2019s related to the more fiery emotions. Keeping your liver happy keeps your emotions in check. If you\u2019re waking up between 1 and 3 a.m., you should look into unaddressed anger, anxiety, or frustration.
