It\u2019s important then to acknowledge our successes or failures and remind ourselves that they are a direct result of our own effort or lack thereof, not of factors outside our control.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the difference between having a <em>\u201cfixed mindset\u201d<\/em> or a <em>\u201cgrowth mindset\u201d<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/graphics\/fixed-flex_mind-set.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download this FREE infographic \u2013 Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset<\/a> &#8211; from my <a href=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/wordpress\/free-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FREE Resources page<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/\">my website<\/a> to learn more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/graphics\/fixed-flex_mind-set.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2211\" src=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/fixed-flex_mind-set-150.jpg\" alt=\"growth mindset vs fixed mindset\" width=\"71\" height=\"94\" \/><\/a>A \u201cfixed mindset\u201d assumes that our abilities can\u2019t be changed in any meaningful way, and success or failure is the reinforcement of the traits we were \u201cborn\u201d with. On the other hand, when we have a \u201cgrowth mindset,\u201d we see obstacles and challenges as opportunities for growth beyond our existing abilities.<\/p>\n<p>These two mindsets spur a great deal of our behavior so it\u2019s essential to recognize if you tend toward a fixed mindset and try to shift your thinking toward a growth mindset.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>A growth mindset will keep you trying when you hit obstacles.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>When we are hungry, cold, or feel in danger, we have no trouble finding the \u201cmotivation\u201d to eat, stay warm, or get somewhere safe. But when comes to everyday situations that don\u2019t hold a life or death outcome, we suddenly find ourselves searching for the \u201cmotivation\u201d to make it happen. This happens all too often when it comes to setting and achieving our goals.<\/p>\n<p>Here is this third of a three-part <a href=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog Goals Series<\/a>, I offer up 3 ways to stay motivated to reach your goals:<\/p>\n<h2>Maslow&#8217;s Hierarchy of Needs<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maslow\u2019s Hierarchy of Needs<\/a> as devised by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abraham_Maslow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abraham Maslow<\/a>, once basic needs such as food, water, and safety are satisfied, humans are naturally motivated to embark on an ongoing quest to reach our full potential.<\/p>\n<p>So is it really the problem of lack of motivation? Or are we just having trouble following through?<\/p>\n<p>Often the problem is our misguided concept of motivation itself. Next, is to make that goal a habit so that it is soon integrated into your everyday living. \u00a0If you\u2019re thinking seriously about making a behavioral change, lack of motivation isn\u2019t the reason you\u2019re stuck in \u201ctrying to get traction\u201d mode. According to Stanford professor and corporate consultant, social scientist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bjfogg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BJ Fogg<\/a>, the problem is more likely related to a lack of \u201cability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No, Fogg is not suggesting you\u2019re incapable of change. Fogg theory is that we all experience, to varying degrees, scarcity in resources such as time, money, and skills, and that scarcity can interfere with our ability to accomplish even what we are plenty motivated to achieve.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.behaviormodel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2213 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Fogg-Model-150.jpg\" alt=\"Fogg Model\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a>According to Fogg\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.behaviormodel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">behavior model<\/a>, you have two options: You can try to get more of the resource you\u2019re lacking (easier said than done) or you can scale down the behavior to match the resource you do have (more practical). Want to start meditating but can\u2019t find the 30 minutes to spare? Start with 5 minutes. Want to get fit but have no idea where to start? Hire a coach to set you up with a 10-minute workout plan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Motivation isn\u2019t constant<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Motivation waxes and wanes. Be ready with options.<\/p>\n<p>In the throes of inspiration, we often set ambitious schedules that seem entirely doable to our highly motivated selves. I\u2019m going to take four yoga classes a week! Starting today, I\u2019m going to take three deep breaths every time I get mad at my kids!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.behaviormodel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2214 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Fogg-Behavior-Model-150.jpg\" alt=\"fogg model 2\" width=\"150\" height=\"108\" \/><\/a>But the minute we fail to meet these high expectations, we throw in the towel. Eh, I don\u2019t feel like yoga today, so forget yoga.<\/p>\n<p>What we forget is that motivation isn\u2019t constant. Sometime you\u2019re just not feeling it, so it\u2019s important to build in daily options to harness your \u201cmotivation wave,\u201d the daily or even hourly fluctuations in motivation that Dr. Fogg describes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><em>The idea is to take a more challenging path when you are feeling inspired and an easier route when motivation is waning.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Let\u2019s say your goal is to write a page in your journal every night before bed. You get home late from an event one night and just want to roll into bed \u2014 your motivation wave is hitting bottom. Instead of blowing off your new habit completely, make it easier for yourself and just write down one sentence or one thing you\u2019re grateful for.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 External rewards and fear can motivate. But only temporarily<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/special\/health\/sitting\/Sitting.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2215\" src=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Sitting-150.jpg\" alt=\"don't just sit there\" width=\"103\" height=\"145\" \/><\/a>Have you ever had a flash of motivation upon learning a sobering new fact? Maybe you were reading this Washington Post article and learned that <a href=\"http:\/\/successseriesllc.com\/wordpress\/2018\/how-to-reach-your-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">excessive sitting can lead to diabetes<\/a> so you suddenly bolt out of your chair every hour. Or your company launches a \u201cbiggest loser\u201d competition with cool prizes, so you start skipping meals in an attempt to drop 10 pounds fast.<\/p>\n<p>Your mission succeeds \u2026 for a few days.<\/p>\n<p>Fact is, change inspired by fear or external rewards never lasts. Of course it\u2019s inspiring to learn new facts or be tempted with a prize. But rather than dwell on the risks of doing the wrong thing, relish the positive experience of doing something new and positive. If you don\u2019t have an intrinsically motivating reason for taking on a new habit you won\u2019t keep it a part of your daily routine for long.<\/p>\n<p>Friend and mentor <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Hyatt\u2019s<\/a> wife, Gail Hyatt, puts it this way:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/photos\/people-lose-their-way-when-they-lose-their-why-gail-hyatt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cPeople lose their way, when they lose their why\u201d<\/a><\/strong>. <\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>When your good intentions go up against your preset behavioral patterns &#8211; your automatic response mechanism &#8211; knowing and remembering what\u2019s really driving you (your \u201cwhy\u201d) may be all that keeps you on course.
